Before you book an IELTS One Skill Retake, check it's accepted where you're sending it

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you sit just one of the four skills again instead of the whole test, which saves time if three of your bands were already fine. The catch is that not every visa office or regulator accepts a retake result in place of a full sitting. Booking one and then finding out it will not be accepted costs you both the fee and the weeks you waited for a result. Here is what One Skill Retake actually covers, and where it is and is not accepted for the countries and regulators that come up most often.

What IELTS One Skill Retake actually is

One Skill Retake lets you sit a single skill again within 60 days of an eligible full IELTS on computer test, and you can only use it once per full test. It has the same format and timing as the regular IELTS test, and your scores in the other three sections do not change; only the retaken skill gets a new score, which is then combined with your original results into a new Test Report Form.

Where it is accepted

Acceptance depends entirely on the organisation reading your result, not on IELTS itself. Two organisations can look at the exact same Test Report Form and reach different conclusions about whether a retake is good enough, which is why checking the specific destination matters more than checking IELTS's own general rules about how the retake works. The table below covers the places readers ask about most; always confirm on the official page before you book, since rules can change.

IELTS One Skill Retake: accepted or not, by destination
DestinationAccepts One Skill Retake?Official source
Australia (Department of Home Affairs visas)Yes, for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, as part of the accepted IELTS General and Academic routesimmi.homeaffairs.gov.au
Canada (Express Entry)No. IRCC does not accept it for Express Entrycanada.ca
UK (Nursing and Midwifery Council)No. The NMC does not accept it, along with IELTS Online and the IELTS Indicator testnmc.org.uk
New Zealand (skilled residence visas)Yes. Immigration New Zealand lists IELTS General or Academic, including One Skill Retake, among its accepted testsimmigration.govt.nz

Notice the pattern: migration authorities in Australia and New Zealand have added One Skill Retake to their accepted routes, while Canada's Express Entry and the UK's NMC have specifically excluded it. If you are applying for something not listed here, such as a different visa subclass, a different health regulator or a university, the rule for that body may be different again and is worth checking directly rather than assuming it will follow the same pattern as a similar-looking organisation in the same country.

Before you book a retake: 4 things to check

  1. Find the exact rule for your destination. Search the regulator or immigration department's own English-language requirements page, not a forum or agent's summary, and look specifically for the words "One Skill Retake".
  2. Check your eligible window. You can only sit a One Skill Retake within 60 days of the full test it is attached to, and only once per full sitting, so a retake only works if you book it in time.
  3. Confirm which skill is actually holding you back. A retake only replaces one skill's score; if two of your bands are short of the requirement, retaking one will not fix the other.
  4. Keep your original Test Report Form. The retake result is combined with your original sitting, so you need both when you submit your application.

A worked example: one weak skill, one retake

Imagine a nurse sitting a full IELTS Academic test for professional registration. Three of the four skills clear the mark the regulator asks for, but writing comes in just short. Retaking the full test would mean booking all four skills again and waiting through listening, reading and speaking results that were already fine. One Skill Retake lets this candidate sit only the writing paper again, within 60 days of the original test, without touching the three scores that already met the bar.

The same logic applies to a skilled migrant retaking IELTS General Training for a visa, or anyone whose speaking score lands slightly below what a university or employer asked for: the retake fixes the one number that fell short. It does not give a second attempt at a skill that already passed, and it does not let you swap which skill you sit based on which one you simply prefer.

What your results show after a retake

A One Skill Retake does not produce a second, separate certificate. The retaken skill's new score is combined with the three original scores from your full test into a single, updated Test Report Form, so whoever reads your result sees one document with four current skill scores and one overall score, not two reports they have to add together themselves.

Because the combined result still depends on the three original scores coming from the same full sitting, keep both your original Test Report Form and any confirmation of the retake until the combined document is issued, in case an organisation asks to see how the final scores were reached.

If you need to retake a skill, practise that skill specifically

Because a retake only changes one score, the most efficient use of your remaining time is focused practice on exactly that skill rather than a general review of the whole test. PractiseNow's Starter, Builder and Exam levels let you work through a skill at an easier pace first and then move up to timed, unhelped conditions that match test day, with AI feedback on your spoken or written answers so you can see which criteria are pulling your score down before you resit. If you want to see what each plan unlocks before you pay for a retake, compare plans and credits, or start free to try a few questions in your weakest skill first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take One Skill Retake more than once?

It is attached to one full test and can be used once per full sitting; it is not a repeatable top-up.

Does a retake change my other three scores?

No. The One Skill Retake has the same format and timing as the regular test, and your scores in the other sections do not change; only the retaken skill is rescored.

Who decides if my retake result will be accepted?

The organisation you are applying to, not IELTS. The same retake result can be accepted by one visa office and rejected by another, which is why checking the specific destination matters more than checking IELTS's own general rules.

Is One Skill Retake available for IELTS Online?

This article covers IELTS taken on computer at a test centre; always check the delivery mode rules for your specific destination, since some organisations that accept computer-delivered IELTS exclude online or at-home versions entirely.

What if my destination is not in the table above?

Go to that organisation's own English-language requirements page and search for "One Skill Retake" by name; if the page does not mention it at all, contact the organisation directly before you book, rather than assuming either way.
