Skilled Worker visa English at B2: book the wrong IELTS and your result may not count

Published 7 min read

A worried, determined man with headphones around his neck holds up a blurred booking confirmation beside a rainy window.

If you are applying for a UK Skilled Worker visa and need to prove your English with a test, the test you book matters as much as the score you get. Book an ordinary IELTS or PTE sitting instead of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from the approved list, and the result may not count for your visa, which can mean paying for a second test and losing weeks before you can apply.

This article explains what the B2 English requirement means, which tests are on the UK's approved SELT list, how to book the right version, how long a result stays valid, and how to plan your practice so you reach the level on the first attempt.

What the B2 English requirement for the Skilled Worker visa means

UK Visas and Immigration says that Skilled Worker visa applicants who prove their English with a test must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider. The official Skilled Worker English page sets the level: you must show you can read, write, speak and understand English to at least level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

What B2 is, in plain words

The CEFR is a scale used across Europe to describe language ability, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (very advanced). B2 is often called upper intermediate. At this level you can usually follow the main ideas of complex speech and text on familiar topics, take part in discussions, and write clear, detailed text. For the visa, though, what counts is not how you describe your English but the result of an approved test.

Four skills, not one overall number

The requirement covers reading, writing, speaking and understanding English. Plan for each skill to reach the level on its own. A strong reading result does not make up for weak speaking if the rules ask for every skill.

Other ways to prove English

The gov.uk page also lists ways to meet the requirement that do not involve a test. Read it carefully before you book anything: if one of them applies to you, you may not need a SELT at all.

Which tests are on the approved SELT list

A SELT is not just any English test. The UK government's SELT guidance lists the approved tests and providers. The list includes:

IELTS for UKVI

The British Council offers IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and IELTS for UKVI Life Skills, as its IELTS questions page shows. For a Skilled Worker visa, the version on the SELT list is IELTS for UKVI. The names are close, so read the booking screen slowly. If you are still deciding between the two IELTS formats, the article on IELTS Academic or General Training explains how they differ.

PTE Academic UKVI

Pearson describes PTE Academic UKVI as a 4-skill Secure English Language Test approved by the UK Home Office for work and study visas. Pearson also says PTE Academic UKVI has the same content, format and scoring as PTE Academic; the difference is a Unique Reference Number (URN) used for some UK visa applications. In practice, this means you prepare for both in the same way, but you must book the UKVI version. The guide to choosing between PTE Academic and PTE Core shows how easy it is to book a version that does not fit your visa.

How long your SELT result stays valid

For a UK visa application, the SELT must be on the approved list, sat at an approved test location, and awarded in the two years before the date of your application. That gives you three checks to make:

  1. The test is on the list on the day you take it.
  2. You sit it at an approved test location. Check the location when you book, not only the test name.
  3. The result is less than two years old on the date you apply. If your job start date or sponsor's paperwork is likely to slip, do not test too early.

Booking the right test: a step-by-step check

  1. Read the Skilled Worker English page on gov.uk and confirm that you need to prove English with a test.
  2. Open the SELT guidance and pick a test from the approved list.
  3. Check the score you need for B2 in each skill with the official guidance and the test provider before you pay.
  4. On the booking site, choose the UKVI version (or the exact SELT name on the list) and an approved test location.
  5. Work out the latest date you can sit the test so the result is still within two years when you apply, and leave time for a retake.
  6. Keep your booking confirmation and, for PTE Academic UKVI, note your URN.

How to prepare so you reach B2 the first time

Because PTE Academic UKVI has the same content and format as PTE Academic, and IELTS for UKVI is still an IELTS test, you can prepare with standard practice for your chosen test. What matters is that you practise every skill, at real timing, before test day.

Find your weakest skill early

Take one timed practice set in each skill in your first week. The skill with the lowest result is the one most likely to stop your application, so give it the most study time.

Practise speaking and writing with feedback

Speaking and writing are the hardest skills to judge on your own. Record your answers, listen back, and compare your writing with the task instructions. On PractiseNow you choose your test, such as IELTS General Training or PTE Academic, and see only its task types and timings. Each spoken or written answer gets an estimated score and line-by-line corrections from AI; these are practice estimates, not official results.

Build up to test-day timing

Start with guided practice, then remove help step by step until you are working at real timing with no hints. PractiseNow sets this out as three levels, Starter, Builder and Exam, with Exam level at real timing and real difficulty. The home page shows the task types for each test and how the practice levels work.

A sample study week

  • Monday: one listening set and one reading set at real timing; review every wrong answer.
  • Tuesday: speaking practice on your weakest task type; record and replay.
  • Wednesday: one writing task, then rewrite it using the feedback.
  • Thursday: repeat your weakest skill.
  • Friday: a short mixed session under exam conditions.
  • Weekend: rest one day; read or listen to English news for the other.

Your visa is only one part of the move. Employers will also read your CV, and Build AI CV has a section where you can show your English test result and date next to your work history.

Common mistakes with the UK SELT

  • Booking standard IELTS or PTE. The approved list names the UKVI versions; a standard sitting may not count.
  • Ignoring the test location. The test must be sat at an approved location.
  • Testing too early. A result older than two years on the day you apply will not help you.
  • Relying on an old copy of the rules. Requirements and the approved list can change; check gov.uk before you book and again before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is standard IELTS accepted for the Skilled Worker visa?

The approved SELT list names IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills, not a standard IELTS sitting. Book IELTS for UKVI if you choose IELTS, and confirm on the gov.uk SELT guidance.

Is PTE Academic UKVI harder than PTE Academic?

No. Pearson says the two have the same content, format and scoring. The UKVI version is the one on the approved list and comes with a Unique Reference Number for some UK visa applications.

How long is a SELT result valid for a UK visa?

The test must have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application, and sat at an approved test location.

Do practice scores show whether I have reached B2?

Practice scores are estimates that help you plan your study. Only the official result from an approved SELT counts for your visa application.
