Need Superior English for Australia? IELTS 8 each doesn't mean the same score in PTE or OET

You need Superior English for your Australian visa, and you have heard it means "IELTS 8 each". That part is true, but if you switch to PTE Academic or OET thinking the same rule applies evenly to every skill, you could book the wrong test, aim at the wrong skill and pay the fee again. Superior English is the highest English level Home Affairs uses, and in PTE and OET the scores you need are different for each skill. This guide shows you exactly what Superior English means in IELTS, PTE Academic and OET, which skills are hardest to reach, and how to plan your practice.

This is test advice, not visa advice. The Department of Home Affairs sets the English levels and decides which visa needs which level, so always confirm your own case on the official page.

What "Superior English" means for Australian visas

Home Affairs describes several English levels, from Functional up to Superior. Each level is a set of minimum scores for each skill in an accepted test. Superior is the top of that scale.

On the official Superior English page, the IELTS requirement is at least 8 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking, in IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. Every one of the four scores has to reach the minimum. A high overall score with one weaker skill is not enough.

Which tests count

For English tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs accepts C1 Advanced, CELPIP General, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training (including One Skill Retake), LANGUAGECERT Academic, Michigan English Test, OET, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT, taken at a secure test centre. Tests delivered completely online, such as IELTS Online and OET@Home, are not accepted. The full list is on the English language requirements page.

Superior English scores in IELTS, PTE Academic and OET

Here is the Superior level next to Proficient, the level just below it, so you can see how far the step up is in each test. The PTE and OET scores are for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025.

IELTS, Superior8888
IELTS, Proficient7777
PTE Academic, Superior69708588
PTE Academic, Proficient58596976
OET, Superior390400420400
OET, Proficient350360380360

If you are coming from the Proficient level, the guide to Proficient English scores explains that level in detail.

PTE Academic: the uneven bar

In IELTS, Superior is the same number for every skill. In PTE Academic it is not. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Superior English needs at least 69 for listening, 70 for reading, 85 for writing and 88 for speaking. So in PTE, writing and speaking carry most of the challenge. A test taker who is strong in listening and reading but only average in speaking may find PTE harder for Superior than they expect.

Older PTE results

For PTE Academic tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, the Superior requirement was 79 in each component. Results from an English test taken on or before 6 August 2025 may be used for Australian visas until 6 August 2028 inclusive, depending on the visa. If you have an older result, check the official page to see how it applies to you.

OET: writing is the highest bar

For OET taken on or after 7 August 2025, Superior English needs at least 390 for listening, 400 for reading, 420 for writing and 400 for speaking. Each OET sub-test is reported on a 0-500 scale, so the writing score is the one to plan around. OET is a healthcare test, so it is mainly a choice for nurses, doctors and other health professionals who are already preparing for it.

Which test is the better route to Superior English?

There is no single answer, because the numbers in each test measure your English in different ways. What matters is where your own strengths are.

  • Even skills across the board: IELTS asks for the same score in each skill, which can suit someone with no clear weak area.
  • Strong listening and reading, weaker speaking: look carefully at PTE, because its speaking requirement is the highest of its four.
  • Healthcare professionals already studying for OET: one test may then serve both your registration and your visa, but check the writing requirement first.

Before you choose, take a timed practice set in each skill and compare your weakest skill with the table above. The gap in your weakest skill tells you more than your average.

A practice plan for Superior English

  1. Find your weakest skill. Do one timed set in listening, reading, writing and speaking, then mark the skill furthest from the Superior minimum.
  2. Learn the task types for that skill. At this level, small errors cost marks. Know what each task asks and how it is marked.
  3. Practise with help first, then without. Build accuracy slowly, then move to test timing with no hints.
  4. Get feedback on every writing and speaking answer. Look for patterns: repeated grammar slips, missing ideas, answers that run short.
  5. Re-test the weak skill every week. Track the gap to the minimum, not just your overall result.
  6. Book the real test when your weakest skill is consistently above the line. Book only through the official test provider.

How PractiseNow can help with this plan

PractiseNow's practice is built in three levels, Starter, Builder and Exam, that remove help step by step and end with test-day timing. For speaking, you record your answers in the browser and AI estimates a score and gives feedback on each answer. Every spoken or written answer gets an estimated score, the key ideas you covered and missed, and line-by-line corrections you can practise straight away. These are practice estimates, not official results, and they may differ from the score you get on test day. You can pick your test and see its task types before you sign up.

Common mistakes when aiming for Superior English

  • Reading only the IELTS number. "8 each" is the IELTS rule. If you plan to sit PTE Academic or OET, use that test's own minimum for each skill from the official page.
  • Looking at the overall score. Home Affairs checks every skill against its minimum. One skill below the line means the level is not met.
  • Booking an at-home test. Tests delivered completely online are not accepted for Australian visas, even if the result looks the same on paper.
  • Using old score tables. The PTE and OET minimums changed for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Make sure the numbers you are aiming for match your test date.
  • Practising only what you enjoy. Most of your time should go to the skill with the biggest gap, even when it is the one you like least.
